Roman Emperor - Lucius Verus

Lucius Aurelius Verus (original name Lucius Ceionius Commodus) born in Rome, Italy on December 15, 130 A.D. Roman emperor from 161-169.

Adopted by Emperor Hadrian in 136 and then, with Marcus Annius Verus (later Marcus Aurelius Antoninus), by Emperor Antoninus Pius in 138, he and his adopted brother became imperial heirs.

Verus was quaestor (153) and consul (154; 161).

At Pius' death Verus and Marcus (reigned 161-180) shared the sovereignty, but the latter, who was 10 years older, was considered the senior sovereign. Verus' character was inferior to that of Marcus, who employed him as commander of an expedition against Parthia (162-166) and campaigned with him against German invaders of Italy (168).

Verus died in Altino, January 169. His death soon relieved Marcus of a partner who, if he had lived longer, probably would have been more of a hindrance than a help.
